Four questions, one rough range

Roof Cost Calculator for Buffalo, NY

Planning a new roof in Buffalo, NY? Answer four short questions about your house and this tool shows a rough price range for shingles or metal. It runs on published New York costs, so think of the number as a budgeting aid. The real price comes later, from a roofer who measures your roof.

How the Tool Decides

Before you start. The calculator never sees your roof, so it works backward from living space. It splits your home's size by its number of stories to get a footprint. Then it adds 12% for a pitch you could walk on, or 30% for a steep one, plus 10% for the overhang at the edges. That roof area is multiplied by a low and a high rate per square foot.

The rates come from these cost rows:

Cost rowFigureSource (year)
New York 3-tab shingles, per sq ftabout $6.70RoofObservations, 2026
New York architectural shingles, per sq ftabout $7.40RoofObservations, 2026
New York premium shingles, per sq ftabout $9.20RoofObservations, 2026
New York exposed-fastener metal, per sq ftabout $9.90RoofObservations, 2026
New York standing-seam metal, per sq ftabout $15.30RoofObservations, 2026

These are statewide 2026 numbers, because no source we found publishes a figure for Buffalo alone. The same source puts New York roughly 20% above the U.S. average, with the highest prices near New York City. Shingles run from 3-tab at the low end to premium at the top. Metal starts with exposed-fastener panels and climbs to standing seam with a premium coating, which the same source lists near $19.10.

  • Steep, busy rooflines. Victorian gables, turrets and dormers take more time and care, so those jobs tend to land in the upper half of the range.
  • Old layers coming off. Stripping two or more layers, or removing slate, can show up as its own line on the estimate.
  • Ice-and-water shield. The membrane along the eaves that helps against ice dams is often listed separately.
  • Decking you can't see yet. Soft or rotted boards only show once the old roof is off, and replacing them adds cost.
  • A permit, where one is needed. Ask your roofer whether your city, town or village requires one and who will file it.

Slate is a different budget entirely. It costs far more than shingles, and this tool doesn't try to price it.

Next Steps

When you want a real price, send a request. Your details go to one independent roofer in the area, and that roofer visits, measures and lists the job line by line. The referral costs you nothing; the roofer may pay us for it. Before signing, note the roofer's City of Buffalo contractor license number and phone the city to confirm it. Homes in Amherst or the Town of Tonawanda call for that town's registration.
